Description

Crispy golden Homemade Mozzarella Sticks deliver a cheesy delight that melts hearts with each crunchy bite. Perfectly breaded and fried, these Italian-inspired appetizers will make you the star of any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale

Cheese and Coating:

  • 16 oz mozzarella cheese block
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese

Breading Ingredients:

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp dried oregano

Frying Ingredients:

  • 4 cups vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil (for additional greasing)

Instructions

  1. Slice the mozzarella block into uniform rectangular sticks, approximately 4 inches long and 1/2 inch thick, ensuring consistent sizing for even cooking.
  2. Prepare three separate shallow dishes: one with flour seasoned with salt, pepper, and oregano; another with beaten eggs; and the third with a mixture of breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese.
  3. Individually coat each mozzarella stick first in the seasoned flour, shaking off excess to create a light, even layer.
  4. Dip the floured cheese stick into the beaten eggs, ensuring complete coverage and allowing excess to drip off.
  5. Roll the egg-coated stick in the breadcrumb-parmesan mixture, pressing gently to create a thick, adherent coating.
  6. Place the breaded cheese sticks on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze for 30 minutes to help the coating set and prevent cheese from melting too quickly during frying.
  7. Heat vegetable oil in a deep, heavy-bottomed pot to 375°F, using a thermometer for precise temperature control.
  8. Carefully lower the frozen mozzarella sticks into the hot oil, working in small batches to maintain oil temperature and prevent overcrowding.
  9. Fry for 2-3 minutes, rotating occasionally, until the exterior turns golden brown and crispy while the cheese remains melted inside.
  10. Remove the sticks using a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to absorb excess oil.
  11. Let cool for 2-3 minutes before serving to prevent burning and allow the cheese to set slightly.
  12. Serve immediately with marinara sauce or preferred dipping condiment.

Notes

  • Freeze the mozzarella sticks for at least 30 minutes before frying to prevent cheese from leaking out during cooking.
  • Use low-moisture mozzarella for the best texture and to minimize oil splattering when frying.
  • Double-coat the cheese sticks by repeating the egg and breadcrumb dredging for an extra crispy, thick exterior.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute all-purpose flour with gluten-free flour and use gluten-free breadcrumbs or crushed pork rinds.
